Hypnotherapy for Anxiety and Depression

Hypnotherapy is a therapy that spans hundreds of years and has many practitioners across the UK. The goal for Lincoln Counselling in Lincoln is to help you learn to better control your state of awareness. In the case of anxiety and depression, hypnotherapy sessions may be focused on helping you achieve a state of relaxation and perhaps to change thought patterns.

The therapist’s suggestions will depend on the condition or behaviour you are trying to treat. Hypnotherapy can help target unwanted or unhealthy habits and possibly replace them with healthier behaviors. Examples include being able to better control pain or anxiety or adjusting negative thought patterns that could be worsening depression symptoms.

Pros of hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy offers the potential to help treat your medical conditions without the need for invasive therapies or additional medications. Therapists consider hypnotherapy a safe treatment option, with minimal side effects.

While it may not work for everyone, hypnotherapy is what’s known as a complementary therapy. A person can use hypnotherapy in addition to other treatments for depression to enhance an overall sense of well-being, lift mood, and boost feelings of hopefulness.

A person with depression experiences a wide variety of emotions. Hypnotherapy can help a person learn to reduce and/or better control feelings of anxiety, stress, and sadness. Hypnotherapy is also used to treat negative behaviors that could be worsening a person’s depression. These behaviors may include smoking and poor eating and sleeping habits.

Hypnotherapy for Anxiety

Essentially, hypnosis is a series of reminders to reduce anxiety and fear, encouraging clients' minds to go in more positive directions when they feel overwhelmed by negativity. Sometimes it’s necessary for us to clear out past experiences, which means we’ll do something called “regression” — we will guide you back to the first time a traumatic experience occurred and help you process it so that you can release it from your subconscious. That way we can work with the present in its present form.

Anxiety is the feeling of fear, unease or worry. We all get anxious from time to time. But when it becomes too overwhelming and it starts to affect our life, that’s the time anxiety becomes a disorder. Anxiety is often the main symptom of many other mood disorders, such as phobia, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) makes a person anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than one specific event. This mental health problem can cause physical and mental symptoms, from feelings of restlessness to difficulty concentrating and insomnia.

Hypnotherapy for Depression

Depression is more than feeling blue. It involves more severe, and physically and mentally paralysing sadness that carries on for over two weeks. Many different situations can trigger the onset of depression, such as job loss, death of a loved one, divorce or separation, bankruptcy, or home foreclosure. People with depression experience strong sense of hopelessness, which makes it difficult for them to deal with their day to day tasks, even the most basic ones like getting up from bed or going to work. They are also likely to isolate themselves due to the belief that they are better off alone or that no one understands them. And because of these serious symptoms of depression.

Lincoln Counselling will work on your depression by targeting the underlying basis of the depression, and complete the “unfinished business” that otherwise continues to recycle as self-sabotaging thoughts and behaviours. With hypnotherapy, you can go down deeper to your traumatic experiences, memories and stored emotions, which means they can quickly release them from the mind and body.

And once these self-sabotaging behaviours get resolved, you can utilise hypnotic suggestibility to improve their perspective and functioning. In 2007, research from University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, represents the first controlled comparison of hypnotherapy with a well-established psychotherapy for depression, meeting the APA criteria for a “probably efficacious” treatment for depression. They found that the study participants who went through cognitive hypnotherapy had greater reduction in depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, respectively, over and above those who received cognitive behavioural therapy.

There is a great deal of scientific evidences attesting to the significant benefits of hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety and depression. So if you or someone you know who is going through any of these mental health disorders, give hypnotherapy a try. Being all natural and safe, this treatment is something to look forward to.
